Getting Started with The Shiny Side Up Motorcycle Training

Starting your motorcycle journey can feel overwhelming. There’s gear to buy, rules to learn, and skills to develop. The Shiny Side Up breaks it down into manageable steps. We guide you through everything from choosing the right bike to mastering basic maneuvers.

Our beginner courses cover:

  1. Motorcycle controls and safety gear

  2. Basic riding techniques

  5. Confidence-building exercises

We focus on building a solid foundation. You’ll learn how to handle your bike smoothly and predictably. This foundation is crucial for passing your ICBC test and for safe riding beyond the classroom.

For those with some experience, we offer advanced courses that sharpen your skills. You’ll practice cornering, lane positioning, and hazard avoidance. We help you ride smarter, not just faster.

Can you ride a bike all year in Vancouver?

The short answer is yes. Vancouver’s mild climate makes it one of the best places in Canada for year-round riding. Rain is the biggest challenge, but with the right gear and mindset, it’s manageable. BUT - and if you got this far send me an email to say hi and claim a free prize! mailto:info@theshinysideup.ca

But honestly no one not even me rides all year. I stop when there is snow, ice or salt on the roads. Obvious why not to ride in snow and ice but salt will EAT your bike in-front of you. You may not know but those parallel white lines you see on the road are salt sprayed by the 'brine trucks' from the city to stop the roads freezing. Honestly I only ever ride my Africa Twin in the winter as you cannot really avoid salt and it's a dirt bike and it gets dirty..

BUT Here is how to keep riding more through the seasons:

  • Invest in waterproof gear - A good jacket, pants, and gloves keep you dry and comfortable.

  • Adjust your riding style - Slow down, increase following distance, and brake gently.

  • Maintain your bike regularly - Check brakes, tires, and lights often.

Riding in the rain builds your skills and confidence. It forces you to be more alert and precise. The Shiny Side Up Riding includes training for wet weather conditions, so you’re ready no matter what the sky throws at you.

Navigating Metro Vancouver’s Roads with Confidence

Metro Vancouver’s roads can be tricky. From busy highways to narrow mountain passes, you need to be sharp. The Shiny Side Up teaches you how to read the road and anticipate hazards.

Key tips we emphasize:

  • Scan ahead constantly - Look for potential dangers early.

  • Use your mirrors and signals - Communicate clearly with other drivers.

  • Position yourself for visibility - Stay where others can see you.

  • Manage intersections carefully - Watch for turning vehicles and pedestrians.

  • Adapt to traffic flow - Stay calm and patient in congestion.

We also cover specific local challenges like the Lions Gate Bridge, Capilano Road, and the Sea-to-Sky Highway. Knowing these routes helps you plan safer rides and avoid surprises.

Our instructors ride with you, offering real-time feedback. This hands-on approach builds your skills faster and makes you a more confident rider.
